Common Questions

A Little Clarity
Before Your Visit.

How Do I Know Whether I Am A Candidate?

Your diagnosis, prior treatments, symptoms, overall health, and goals all matter. The condition pages explain what may prompt a consultation. Only a clinical evaluation can determine whether a procedure is appropriate.

Do I Need A Referral Or Specific Testing First?

For tremor, Parkinson’s disease, and dystonia, a movement disorders neurologist (at UCLA or near you) confirms the diagnosis and that medication has been tried, then refers you. For epilepsy, the epilepsy neurologists complete the workup first and the team decides whether surgery is an option and which procedure fits. For peripheral nerve problems, bring imaging of the affected area (usually MRI with and without contrast, with nerve imaging) and an EMG and nerve conduction study, and a record of the medications and injections already tried. For pain, stroke recovery, rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions, a referral from your treating physician is usually enough. If you do not have the right specialist, call and the team will arrange one. Insurance authorization requirements vary; check with your insurer.

How Should I Send My Medical Records?

Ask the scheduling team for its current secure records-transfer instructions. This website does not collect medical records or accept uploads.

Can I Request A Second Opinion?

Yes. Call the scheduling team, mention that you are seeking a second opinion, and ask which records to send ahead of the visit. Outside imaging and prior treatment records are especially helpful.

How Do I Check Insurance Coverage?

Verify coverage, referral requirements, and any authorization directly with your insurer and the scheduling team before your appointment.

Where Will I Be Seen?
